Whilst in my second year at University of Nottingham I had an opportunity to take on the role of MDAC’s Student Advocacy Officer, which involved promoting the work of the organisation on campus. This allowed me to familiarize myself with MDAC’s aims and body of work. I wanted to get more involved with its activities and the internship programme was an excellent opportunity to do so. During my stay here I have been engaged in the strategic litigation department, contributing directly to its work, which included weekly reviews of the ECtHR jurisprudence. I was also involved in a long-term legal capacity project, which allowed me to use my language skills to research supported decision-making across Europe and get in touch with NGOs in different countries. I was able to actively participate in staff meetings and meet various experts in the area of mental health law and disability rights. I can honestly say that joining MDAC was one of the best decisions I have made. I have gained a deeper understanding of a wide range of human rights topics, experienced the internal workings of an NGO and fallen in love with the city at first sight.
