Esther Kamau

My name is Esther Kamau. Intern from 25 February to 25 March 2011.

The objective of the internship was to carry out a background research in relation to MDAC’s Africa Programme.

During the internship, I was given two research based tasks. On the first task, I was supposed to carry out research on human rights organisation and individual practitioner in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. On the second task, I carried out a research on the national implementation of CRPD in relation to steps that the aforementioned East African countries have taken to set up the provisions of Article 33.

In overall, the tasks were interesting as well as mind engaging in terms of meeting my objects and expectations. The staff were friendly and helpful which made the atmosphere in the office warm and accommodative.

I benefitted immensely from the internship both professionally and personally. On the professional level, I gain enormous knowledge on law on disability. The exposure to this field of law (especially after following the webcast of the case Stanev v Bulgaria) made me realise that law on disability is a career path I would be interested to pursue. On personal level, the informal and formal interaction with the staff in the office molded my interpersonal skills.
