Stanev v Bulgaria
9 March 2017: Rusi Stanev sadly passed passed away last night in his sleep. Click here for MDAC's tribute to this extraordinary man.
The applicant, Rusi Stanev, was placed under partial guardianship in 2000 and sent to a social care institution by his guardian in 2002. He has never been able to legally challenge either of these measures in domestic courts. In his application to the European Court, he complains of this lack of access to justice as well as the substantive issues of deprivation of liberty and restrictions on his right to a private life and of ill-treatment due to the horrible conditions in the social care institution.
MDAC and the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee represented Mr Stanev during the proceedings.
