18 May 2012. On Monday and Tuesday this week the Mental Disability Advocacy Center and the Hungarian Helsinki Committee co-organised a conference in Budapest to strengthen efforts to prevent torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in places of deprivation of liberty in Hungary.
17 May 2012, Budapest. On the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) MDAC reaffirms its support for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people around the world. In particular, MDAC calls for the recognition of equal rights for LGBTQ persons with disabilities, who face multiple discrimination on the grounds of their disability and sexual orientation or gender identity.
MDAC welcomes Russia’s step towards becoming a State Party to the CRPD and calls on the Russian government to fully implement the Convention and to “take all appropriate measures, including legislation, to modify or abolish existing laws, regulations, customs and practices that constitute discrimination against persons with disabilities” Article 4(1) b) CRPD).
MDAC has signed a joint NGO submission, in which we call on the Minister of Justice and Public Administration to withdraw the proposal, which, if adopted by Parliament, would declare that Hungary is not willing to implement the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
MDAC has been in Chisinau, Moldova for the past four days, where it delivered a training session on how to prevent torture and ill-treatment against people with disabilities by monitoring the rights of detainees in psychiatric and social care institutions. Participants included representatives of the Ombudsman Office (the Center for Human Rights), the National Preventive Mechanism, and Non-Governmental Organisations.

22 March 2012. Earlier this week, the Mental Disability Advocacy Center held a two-day training event on legal capacity and supported decision-making in Sofia, Bulgaria, for the members of the newly established task force on Bulgarian legal capacity law reform.

9 March 2012, Budapest. International Women’s Day falls on 8 March each year. The world celebrates the contributions of women and the struggle for equal rights. This recognition quickly dissipates… today is just another day for many women whose bodies are objectified, behaviours controlled and autonomy ignored.


MDAC invites you to its "Mental Disability Law in Practice" summer university course taking place between 16 - 27 July 2012 at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary.

7 March 2012, Geneva and Budapest. The Mental Disability Advocacy Center welcomes the statement by Professor Juan Mendez, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, that there should be a worldwide ban of solitary confinement of people with psycho-social or intellectual disabilities in all places of detention, including psychiatric and social care institutions.


Throughout the year, MDAC welcomes interns to contribute to its research and monitoring programme. The work is likely to entail:


     - contribution to distinct tasks within current research projects (e.g. literature reviews, fieldwork, analysis, preparation of dissemination materials),
